Determination of the enthalpy of fusion of a pure substance
C-AV-18/EV
When a solid melts, energy is required to break the crystal lattice. A substance whose melting point lies slightly below the ambient temperature is first cooled until it solidifies and then melted in a calorimeter. The enthalpy of fusion is calculated from the temperature decrease due to the melting process measured in the calorimeter.
